Becoming a Christian is not about becoming religious.
It's about coming into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Have you ever needed help? Have you ever needed help with a project around the house or help working on the car? Have you ever needed help bringing in the groceries or taking care of the pets? The short answer to this question is: Yes, we all have needed help before!
To admit that you have needed help in one way or another means that you couldn’t have done it on your own. Going to heaven requires the same answer: I need help! But unlike the above mentioned tasks, you may be able to get those tasks done on your own simply if you work harder or longer. However, if you want to be in Heaven forever with God, no amount of working harder or longer will ever be able to bring you closer to Heaven.
You must admit that you need help. This help only comes from our Saviour. Jesus said it this way in John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
How to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ...
>> Recognize You Need Help Because You Are a Sinner.
For every single person born on earth, this is the starting place. No person was ever born good enough for Heaven. No one could do enough to earn their way to Heaven. No amount of helping yourself or others will do. This is where everyone must start: admitting we need help because we are sinners. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Man comes short of Heaven (the glory of God) because of sin!
>> Realize You Need Help Because There Is a Penalty for Your Sin.
Not only does sin keep you out of Heaven, but it also condemns you to Hell. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” Sin brings both physical and spiritual death. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death” (Revelation 20:14).
>> Receive Jesus as the Help You Need Because He Paid the Penalty.
Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection provided the help for you to go to heaven.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Since Jesus was the only One who could pay for our sin, He is the only Way to Heaven.
>>Repent of Your Sin and Receive Jesus as Your Saviour
The final part of recognizing our helplessness is to repent and receive Him. Acts 20:21 says, “Repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” In order to go to Heaven, you must accept Christ by calling on Him in prayer. He tells us in Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

A simple, sincere prayer is all it takes. You could pray something like this:
"Lord Jesus, I believe that You are God, that You died for my sin, and that You rose again from the dead. I know that I am a sinner, and I ask You now to be my personal Saviour. I’m placing my full trust in You alone, and I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Amen."
